Sep. 20th, 2003 09:23 pmI love Saturday night television on public TV. "Keeping Up Appearances," "As Time Goes By," "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates," "EastEnders." I'm a hopeless Anglophile, so I'm siting in the Big Comfy Chair, knitting my scarf and watching these programs.
I love Patricia Routledge. Watching her reminds me of my secret disappointment that I am not meant to be an actor. I don't talk about it often, but I was quietly saddened when I realized that I'm not a very good actor. To bring a memorable character to life with your own voice, your own body -- perfectly, in a way that seems completely organic -- is so admirable, so beautiful. And so difficult. I respect those who can do it well. And those who can do it without being devoured by their own ego. (See Christopher Guest.)

Did I mention how nice it is to have my nights to myself?
