The next day
Sep. 5th, 2003 09:05 amI had an increasingly wonderful birthday. It began with the post I made yesterday morning, then just got better and better as the day went on. My mom sent me two dozen roses in beautiful colors, my dad and stepmom sent me chocolate and money for small shelves, my sister called and sang "happy birthday" to me on my voice mail, the people in my office surprised me with a cake, balloon, jelly beans, and cards, then my friend in CA sent me flowers from Takashimaya, and all day long my LJ friends sent kind birthday greetings, which made me smile.
Then I left work. Yay! I met my friend L. for sushi at Haru, where we drank a delicious red wine (is it possible that I've acquired a taste for red wine? I can be socially accepted now!) and talked over our joys and sadnesses, and laughed and laughed. Then we saw "The Producers", which was fun. For all my talk of hating musicals, when I see one that's done well, I clap as enthusiastically as the next person.
Then I returned home, read a great post from
nickelchief about the birth of his daughter, and talked to my mom once again before going to bed.

I have one question about cockroaches, though. Last night, as L. and I walked to the subway, she saw a large dead cockroach on the sidewalk. I thought to myself, "That's the first roach I've seen in the city in a long time."
When I got home, I browsed LJ for a while, then my new roommate charged downstairs: "There's an enormous flying bug in my room. It looks like a roach, but can they fly?" This Texan looked at her and said, "Oh yeah, they can fly." Indeed, there was an enormous, Kafka-esque cockroach in her window. I squirmed a little, then opened the window ("you're going that close?" she squealed) and nudged it out with the screen. I think we should have named it, it was that big.
So, two cockroaches in one night. Is this some kind of omen? It probably means that my next year will be filled with good luck and lots of money, huh?

Date: 2003-09-05 08:09 am (UTC)This made me laugh. I'm still waiting for the acquisition of a taste for red wine. I'll drink it (I'm enough of a lush), but I think whites will always be my preference, gauche as it is.

Date: 2003-09-05 08:15 am (UTC)But since I went to Napa and went on that wine tasting, I think I've started to like it. I brought back Merlot, so I have yet to explore the land of white wines... do you have any recommendations?

Date: 2003-09-05 11:45 am (UTC)American variety. the European cockroach is much smaller. all
of them can fly, although they seem to like to crawl, mostly.
