I'm back in NYC, and it's warm here. I realize now that one reason that I liked walking out into the Houston heat is because I was walking out from an air conditioned house. Here, no matter how nice and homey my apartment may be, during the summer, it still can feel like I'm camping outside.
I walked into the main stairwell yesterday, returning from the airport, and the faint smell of summer came back to me. It must be the way the wood expands slightly, releasing barely audible scents, the same ones that have flavored my past summers in the city. When I walked into my apartment, the smell hit me full on. I'm back, for better or worse, to my Adult Life. The summer scent of this place tells me so.
I miss home already. I miss my mother. Even though I know career-wise why I'm here, my heart sometimes wonder why I'm so far away from home.
