I stopped by K-Mart before work (because there are fewer lines in the morning) to buy ten -- count them, ten -- plastic storage tubs for the various papers and supplies that I'm re-storing in my room. I'm in the middle of an intense, look-at-everything-and-throw-as-much-out-as-I-possibly-can, cleaning. I shlepped the storage tubs into work, and now they're sitting twelve feet away from me, in the office in front of my desk. Every time I catch a glimpse of them, my left brain whispers happily, "I get to organize tonight!" My whole day looks forward to the 7 o'clock hour, when I throw away, reorganize, and shove five years of (still useful) deitritus far under my bed.

I'm rediscovering, as I pack for this move, how good it feels to purge.

Ah, the purrrrrge. Mmmmmmmm.

And in the process you get to reconnect with your (recent) past and get a reminder of just where it is you've been lately.

Your wily icon changed back to the Buffalo Nickel when I hit "reply", but - nice icon, o coffee drinker!

So true! I love meeting the recent selves I've been through the stuff that She (She's? This is getting too difficult for grammar) held on to. I get sidetracked so easily when I'm cleaning, because I start reading, and I start remembering, and pretty soon, my entire room is half-opened and it's 2 a.m. But that's a fun part of the process.

Also -- I second the kudos on the new icon. Very nice!

Thanks! This is what I look like when I'm drinking coffee.

You either have not much detritus to show for five years, or a very, very large bed.

My right brain wants to talk to your left brain.

It's true! I actually sleep on a Giant Sized Mattress. I have to sew four Queen-sized sheets together because I can't find anything big enough to fit my bed.

It would be more accurate to say that only part of my detritus lives under my bed. I have yet to tackle the pile beside my computer desk downstairs... Seriously, though, as I was sitting on my bed, contemplating all of it, I realized proudly (says she, holding up her "Former Packrat" Card) that I've done fairly well at not accumulating too many things in the past three or four years. I'm a little mystified by this. Perhaps I'm better at hiding them from myself than I think.

My right brain wants to talk to your left brain.
When I was little, I used to eat M&Ms and Skittles by biting two different colors in half, then mixing the halves up and squishing them together to create a two-toned candy. This is what I imagined when I read this line.

I think I need a vacation. Or a pen and a lot of paper. Maybe both.
