Butta' Cup Lounge and Sarah Vaughn
May. 16th, 2003 08:35 amLast night, CG, my friend who's been staying with us for a week, and I went out to dinner at the Butta' Cup Lounge. What an amazing restaurant! Their drink menu is dazzling -- CG had a Ginga' Snap, my friend had a Champagne Fruit Cocktail, and there were other delights such as Butta' Cream listed on the menu. I had the Ghetto Heaven, which was fresh watermelon juice, simple syrup, and vodka. I only drank about 1/5th of it, and I was light-headed.
This also could have been related to the mind-boggling burger that I had. A half-pound grilled sirloin burger (medium) -- topped with GOAT CHEESE. Goat cheese? I was skeptical at first, but the smooth combination of these two ingredients actually lifted my soul onto a higher plane of existence.
The most important thing to note about the Butta' Cup Lounge is that everyone in the restaurant -- guests included -- is breathtakingly beautiful. The wait staff is gorgeous -- I wanted to kiss every one of them as I made my way out of the restaurant. And the customers are lovely, too. Sitting across from us was a small group of friends, one of whom had her four-year-old son with her. This child was gorgeous. His mother (who was there) was Japanese, and his father (who left before I saw him) must have been black, because this child was a striking mix of the two. I wanted to steal him away for my very own.
The music was smooth and laid-back at first, and I heard someone ask, "Is this Ella or Sarah?" It took me a while to remember the last name of Sarah, and when I remembered "Vaughn", I realized I didn't know her music at all. As the night moved on, the music picked up, and I actually heard Color Me Badd's "I Want to Sex You Up" -- and I was happy about it. Whoever does their mixes is a smart, smart person. How do restaurants get their music? Do they have something akin to a mix tape master who does this all for them?
When we came home, I turned on AudioGalaxy and laid down a huge playlist of Sarah Vaughn. I really, really like her. Whereas I've often thought it would be nice to love Billie Holliday, or Ella Fitzgerald, I knew in my heart that I could only take a couple of their songs at a time. But I actually love Sarah Vaughn's music. I'd like to own her box set, if she had one. I could listen to her sing all night. (And probably would have, had I not been usurped from AGR.)
Sadly, the combination of the vodka, Sarah Vaughn, and the slow-dancing kept me from going outside to see the eclipse. It was so cloudy anyway, I don't think we would have seen much. Did anyone else see it?
