Merry Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, and all those other holidays which used to mean something that have now become nothing more then the vehicle for the expansion of the capitalistic and materialistic hegemonies of the Western Powers.
Ouch. Good to see that your optimism is alive and kicking.
I see it differently. I know many people who recognize the horrible consumerism that the media has inflicted on these holidays, but they still seek miracles. Even my small list of friends on Live Journal (http://sun_set_bravely.livejournal.com/friends) is full of people who are rejecting the hegemonies you describe, who are busy creating their own meaning of these old holiday traditions.
Materialism and capitalism are dangerous things, but so is rabid cynicism, my friend.
