Getting them into trouble
Nov. 1st, 2002 10:34 amI admire writers who aren't afraid to screw things up. I love it when an author gets their characters into a lot of trouble! The higher the stakes, the bigger the payoff. (Also, the bigger the failure -- but that's just as much fun.)
I can already tell that, for me, the juiciest part of NaNoWriMo will be committing myself to the facts I write down. My character already has a name, two late parents, a sister, an uncle, and a farm. No changing these facts now! I have to charge ahead with them recklessly.
And I'm forbidding myself to kill anyone off because it's getting hard to deal with them. Writing like this, with little to no planning ahead, forces me to write things I might otherwise avoid.
