6 Years Out
Sep. 11th, 2007 01:45 pmIt's pouring rain outside, and it strikes me that this is the first rainy September 11th in New York City since today's date became national history. I thought maybe I was making this up, but a quick check of historical weather affirms it. The weather reminds me of Thursday night, September 13th, when the rain and lightning gave me permission to fall apart. I've said these things a thousand times before. I'll likely say them a thousand times again. Bear with me.
It's also the first time since 2001 that September 11th falls on the same day of the week, Tuesday. I draw no public conclusions from this, though my mind is sparking with questions of larger meaning. For now, I just mark it for myself here.
I haven't read much about this year's commemorations, but what I have seen seems to concentrate on the way that people cared for each other on and after that day. It makes me happy to hear about this kind of healing.
This is likely my last September 11th as a full-time resident of New York City, and this is bittersweet for me. I've spent a lot of time thinking and writing about that era of NYC, and, like many of my neighbors, being here on September 11th has shaped much of how I think and feel since then. I think of
nickelchief's experience, years ago, of moving to a new home and commemorating the day miles from the City. I wonder how next year will be for me.
Love to you all, today and every day.
