The Cortlandt Street station on the N/R line reopens today, after being closed for over a year. When did I stop noticing it when the train passed through that station without stopping? When did I (and my fellow passengers) stop staring out the train windows at the way the metal beams were buckled from the impact above? When did they take down those hastily assembled wooden pillars that braced the ceiling? I guess I got to a point where I stopped thinking about it. I suppose I couldn’t think about what’s above that stop every day. Besides, there’s nothing there; there hasn’t been for a while. Just a basin, and probably more than a few unsettled spirits. I suppose it would drive me crazy to think about it every day on my commute to work. Even if my brain probably realizes it on some deep, subconscious level.

Watched "The American President" last night. Three things popped out at me:
1) Now that I’m trying to write a screenplay, I notice good screenplays much more. That is a wonderful script. Funny, smart, insightful. Lovely.
2) I wish I could trust our president like I trust Michael Douglas as a president.
3) Why isn’t Aaron Sorkin the speech-writer for Bush? (see also #1)

Experiment: I've got about 275 CDs (a number which surprises me, as I never set out to collect them). I probably listen to 30% of them on a regular basis. Today, I will start at Bryan Adams, and work my way to the end, probably Trisha Yearwood (this makes my collection look fairly inane, but I promise, there are some really good ones in between those two artists). Obviously, this won’t happen all in one day, but I’ll start it today. I’m making it a rule that I can’t skip songs that I don’t like. Not even if they remind me of ex-boyfriends who were gay or crazy. I have to listen to every song. I haven't decided yet if I'm allowed to interrupt the listening sequence with a CD that I'm craving (ex. Kinky). I'll decide as I go along.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Kinky is so hot. I love this CD. Please check these boys out if you haven’t already. They are fun. I can't stop listening to them.

On a related note, it is imperative that I learn Spanish soon. It's stupid that I don’t know it already.

Why do I keep my hair long when all I do every day is put it up in a ponytail before it even has a chance to dry? Maybe it's the remnants of the myth (?) that boys like girls with long hair better than those with short hair. Even though I know that short hair suits me better. Even though my boyfriend has said that he likes me with either style. Guys? Any comments on this? Am I right or wrong?

I dreamed about Christian Bale last night. Almost all night. I woke up happy.

yes...yes...

----starting with bryan adams? let me just say this: ive always liked bryan adams. heaven, summer of 69, everything i do.....these songs are great

---good luck going through all discs...one day i might have to do that.....not anytime soon..

---the hair the hair...i cant speak for all men, but i can say what i believe: in my eyes, the Myth is true. i prefer the longer hair. there are some good short cuts here and there, but i loooove running my fingers through a ladies hair..

Reign of Fire kicked ass...

I agree! I adored the mockery of the American Hero, I loved the two leads, and it was just so damn fun and funny. My favorite part was when Van Zan jumps off the tower in a badass kamikaze move to kill the dragon, and gets chomped up.

Also, I was hoping for the entire movie that there would be some Bale on McConaughey lovin', but alas...

personally, I've got a thing for short hair (not short as mine, but short). Long hair just gest in my eyes and my mouth when I'm trying to make out with a girl or if we're trying to sleep. As a matter of fact, if you don't want your man coughing up hairballs, I'd say that short hair is the considerate option as well as the fashionable one.

I had to laugh at the ex-boyfriends comment. I have at least one ex that I'm sure is gay, and many more that I'm sure are crazy. And there's songs associated with all of them, unfortunately.

1) I have a picture of that station, taken on the way through during one of my visits to the city. Big sign saying "Do Not Stop" made out of plywood and magic marker. Knowledge that the picture is now something of a collector's item is proof that once again, time staggers onward.

2) Cute movie. Well, Annette Bening was cute, at any rate. And deep, as well. I wrote Andrew Shepard's closing monologue down a long time ago with the intention of using it as an audition piece, but I never got the chance. If I may...

Everybody knows being an American isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say, "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating, at the top of his lungs, that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest." Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free.

3) It's a little more challenging with 3000 CDs, but I plan on doing this one day soon as well. It's actually the entire reason I'm here on LJ...sorta. But soft! I give too much away too soon...

4) Can you name me some of the catchier Kinky tunes to, er, "borrow" to see if they're up my alley?

Also, the subject line is the only Spanish I know.

"You should speak Spanish and your children should speak Japanese."
- Jim Marcus from Die Warzau

5) I used to completely believe in this myth, but this was before college, and before I met a girl or two that was able to make short hair work for them. Now I'm not so sure. Perhaps it's due to the early 90's rebirth of American Punk, but the right girl can now make short hair look quite alluring. When it comes to my aesthetic preferences, most women I find attractive tend to have longer hair, but just as there are some people for which certain colors or styles of dress don't work or don't work as well, so are there people--of either gender--for whom longer hair doesn't work, or doesn't work as well. For more information, see my fashion consultant ex-girlfriend. Or better yet, don't. >=/

As far as my own personal hair growth, while I, too usually end up ponytailing it and forgetting about it for daily work routines, I haven't reached the point of considering it a nuisance (and being that my most recent haircut was over a year ago, and the one before that was four years ago, I guess my nuisance tolerance is way higher than most peoples'). The advantages still outweigh the disadvantages. It feels good to shake that out at the end of the day, or to whip it around when you're dancing, or, or, or. I'd advise you to go with whatever you feel is best for your "look" and convenience, especially considering you have a boyfriend who will love you regardless.

6) "English boy!" ;)

2) I agree -- that monologue is fabulous. My favorite part is "My name is Andrew Shepherd, and I am the president." Chris and I stood up and cheered when we were watching it the other night. I love that strange feeling of knowing that the president is competent.

3) I meant to mention that in my post -- "Of course, this ain't no 'Wall of Sound,' but still a worthy undertaking." I am interested to see your plan unravel...

4) "Mas Y Mas" (played at their concert)
"Soun Tha Primer Amor" (also played at their concert)
"Ejercicio #16" (fun fun fun)

6) Girrrrrlll.... I can't believe you quoted EOTS to me! It's been a long time since anyone around me knew that movie well enough to quote it to me. (Actually, the only one who could do that is now in Germany at war.) So I'm duly impressed.
