I love the new Hem album. It's no surprise really, as I loved their last album, "Rabbit Songs." Some of these harmonies break open the entire midnight sky and release a shower of glittering stars. Truly.
If you get the Magnetic Fields' song "My Girl is the Queen of the Savages" stuck in your head, and then do a Google image search on the song title, this is one of the results. Ain't she fine?
Ever seen 'em live? I just saw them three nights ago. Good group of folks. Good show too, louder and more passionate than they sound on record. They all live in Brooklyn, maybe you'll run into them (I don't know where, somewhere between Atlantic and Pacific Avenues, as if that narrows it down at all).
The singer, Sally, is also "fantastic and RED."
And, I was just listening to Rabbit Songs not 15 minutes ago. Wee-id.
How crazy that you saw them just three nights ago! There must be something in the air... I've seen them a couple of times, once at Makor, and the other in Madison Square Park. I actually prefer them on the album. I love watching the other musicians, but Sally's stage presence is a little weak for me (and she often does that "plug one ear to hear your pitch" thing, which seems strange to me). All of this gives me an overall concert feeling of "meh." Also, I listen to Hem often when I'm going to sleep, so their shows can be a little too down-tempo for me.
I didn't know they lived so close to me! I live close to Atlantic Avenue; I'll have to keep an eye out.
