It was just the outgoing message on her answering machine, but it was all she could bring herself to do. Surely pain can only go down so far. It's only--the way she sounded, the way her voice sounded purposefully unencumbered, you knew there was loss, you knew she had suffered loss in many dimensions, in ways that made this caller want to hang up before leaving trivial words for that voice of hope outside itself.
