Oh yes, my friends, it's time for Part Three of my movie recommendations (aka Keeping Track for Myself) (17 movies):
Part One is here.
Part Two is here.
The Good, The Bleh, and The Ugly
Good = anywhere from "I'd watch it again" to "It changed my life."
Bleh = anywhere from "Wait, I've seen this movie? I already forgot about it" to "It was mildly offensive."
Ugly = anywhere from "This movie was regurgitated film formula and bored me to death" to "I didn't finish it because it was so bad."
* = highly recommended!
The Good
Billy Elliot
*Coal Miner's Daughter
*Bring It On (healthy woman-vs-woman competition? Rock on!)
*Smoke Signals
*The Sting
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Old School
What I Want My Words to Do to You
Napoleon Dynamite
Network
*Shaun of the Dead
The Bleh
Iris
Ordinary People
Mean Girls
The Ugly
Jungle Fever
Angel: Season 2: Disc 3 (too much Drusilla! too much Darla!)
The Manchurian Candidate (2004 remake)

Date: 2005-04-15 09:24 pm (UTC)I keep hearing Jungle Fever is supposed to be rilly rilly good. What gives?

Date: 2005-04-15 09:39 pm (UTC)Napolean Dynamite: CL and I were completely TRIPPED OUT by this movie because of the funky design choices they made (what decade were we in, for crying out loud?). We laughed at some parts, and didn't know what to do with most of it. Then we decided that it was basically the anti-80s high school movie, and we liked it better. Then, we started saying "gosh!" like Napolean does. I'd like to see it again.
Ordinary People: I watched this one because the screenplay book I have lists it as a well-structured film. I thought it was okay. I liked Donald Sutherland's performance. Otherwise, the movie didn't really land with me at all. Eh.
Jungle Fever: I understood the points that he was trying to make, but I felt like the movie was stuffed too full for anything to sink in. I thought it could have been split into two movies. Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee are excellent as always, and Samuel L. Jackson creeped me out like whoa. But overall for me, it didn't live up to the hype.
I say no more!

Date: 2005-04-16 04:06 am (UTC)Can't agree with you more on this one. I couldn't believe how bored I was while watching it. I gave up at 30 minutes.
It takes a lot of...um...talent to make this story uninteresting.
