The preliminary death toll according to the BBC website is now 50,000. These numbers are beyond my understanding.

That's ok. I'm a big redcross supporter. All the agencies are worthwhile, though. I used to want to be a doctor just so I could work for doctors without borders. I really wish I had a situation in life which would allow me to drop everything and go out there and help. You just feel so helpless sitting here far away staring at the pictures and watching the death toll rise at an alarming rate. It's over 55,000 now. It's just unbelievable.

I hear you. 55,000 souls gone from this planet in one fell swoop. No human mind can imagine that. The shift in energy is enormous, and needs all of our empathy and compassion to recover from it.

What is more horrible to try and comprehend is that the number will probably be doubled before all is said and done. There are entire islands unaccounted for. It seriously pains me to even think about it. What I don't understand is the people who are completely non-plussed by all of this...as if, because it has happened in another part of the world, this has nothing to do with them or their lives. I just don't understand that way of thinking. People who think that way are the ones I have the hardest time feeling compassion for.

Talk about synchronicity: Just this morning, I read this George Bernard Shaw quote: "The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them: that's the essence of inhumanity." It's chilling to see and hear people around you disregard the suffering of others. You can only hope that with the gentle nudging of those around them, their compassion can be woken up, along with the understanding that we are all connected, and one person's tragedy is the entire planet's tragedy. But I'm preaching to the choir, aren't I? :)
