Monday Miscellany
Apr. 19th, 2004 10:13 amI spent most of yesterday in Central Park at a picnic, eating my homemade hummus (big winner!), laughing and singing with friends, and flying a kite with the picture of a plane on it (which earned me the nickname "Amelia" from the guy who assembled the kite).
I haven't flown a kite in I-don't-know-how-long. Long enough ago for me to get frustrated, throw the kite down, and never look back. But now that I'm older, and I have more finely tuned hand-eye coordination, I had an awesome time flying that $2 kite. Today, I'm going to go to the grocery store, buy a cheap kite, and fly it in the park. I want to do it during the workday when there are fewer people out for me to accidentally divebomb.
This morning, I'm working on the YMOYL step of appraising every item I own. I typed up the full inventory on Saturday night, and started pricing the big items (eBay is so helpful for this step!). Now I'm just going down the list. There's something interesting about putting a price tag on all my possessions. Of course, I don't plan to sell most of them, but it reminds me that these things are just things (with the exception of my 24-year-old teddy bear, who has been with me since I was one year old), and after I die, they can all be sold for a price. Or given away, or thrown away. They are the residue of my living; they are not my Life itself.
I'm relaxing more into my open days now. For the first few days, I still felt drawn to the frenetic "get-things-done-NOW" energy that clung to my workdays. But now the weather has gotten nicer, my breathing has slowed, and my eyes are able to linger on the sky for longer, just looking, just looking.
I can't wait to fly my kite. I'll let you know how it goes.
