Counting Crows as poetry
Mar. 21st, 2004 10:25 pmNo matter what you think of the Counting Crows' consistent angst, you gotta admit it -- Adam Duritz can write a mean turn of phrase:
"In the middle of the night there's an old man
Threading his toes through a bucket of rain"
-Omaha
Sometimes I forget this and his words catch me off-guard, and I have to doff my cap to this fine wordsmith.
"When I see you, a blanket of stars covers me in my bed"
/
"We drove out to the desert just to lie down beneath this bowl of stars"
-Mrs. Potter's Lullaby
"Staring out of his window as the world rushes by
Arthur Robinson closes the glass and replies,
"I dream of ballerinas and I don't know why,
But I see Cadillacs sailing.
I was born on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay
Maryland and Virginia have faded away
And I keep thinking tomorrow is coming today
so I am endlessly waiting"
-St. Robinson and His Cadillac Dream
"Step out the front door like a ghost
into the fog where no one notices
the contrast of white on white."
-Round Here
"When I think of heaven
deliver me in a black-winged bird
I think of flying down into a sea of pens and feathers
And all other instruments of faith and sex and God
in the belly of a black-winged bird."
-Rain King
"And every time she sneezes I believe it's love
and oh lord.... I'm not ready for this sort of thing
She's talking in her sleep-it's keeping me awake
And Anna begins to toss and turn
And every word is nonsense but I understand and
oh lord. I m not ready for this sort of thing"

she says she's scared of dying,
and she'd like to keep it that way
