Wow. That's the all response I can summon. 76 years of Academy Awards. 3 women nominated. Wow.
Ms. Coppola, the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, is only the third woman, and the first American one, to receive an Oscar nomination for directing. Others were Lina Wertmüller of Italy (for "Seven Beauties" in 1976) and Jane Campion of New Zealand (for "The Piano" in 1993), but neither won.
