Veteran's Day quote
Nov. 11th, 2003 08:27 amThe philosopher Bertrand Russell said of World War I, "All this madness, all this rage, all this flaming death of our civilization and our hopes, has been brought about because a set of official gentlemen, living luxurious lives, mostly stupid, and all without imagination or heart, have chosen that it should occur rather than that any one of them should suffer some infinitesimal rebuff to his country's pride."
I wonder if this is not true for most wars in history, to some extent. I am no political scientist. But I do not understand war, and I don't know that I ever will.

Hello all. I'm quiet, but I'm still here, listening to all your fingers typing beautiful words across the earth.
I wish all of you well in this drawing-in time of year. I like to think of everyone walking on the street as they wrap their coats a little closer and their eyes turn inward, nurturing their private seasons of the heart and soul. I can almost see the flicker of those seasons in the chilled faces on the street. We all carry around small universes behind our sternums. Nurture yours well this year.

Date: 2003-11-11 08:50 am (UTC)A hat I think will be in order, and some good gloves to keep my hands warm. And certainly silk longdrawers.
...
May God and good choices be with the official gentlemen who still have the power to decide how many and when.
